The Latest in Police Fleet Technology

SPECIAL SECTION The Latest in Police Fleet Technology

By Police Fleet Manager Staff

Technological advancements occur on a daily basis, so police departments across the country need to keep up with the newest trends and equipment for their personnel. Today’s police vehicles are outfitted with the latest devices to make officers safer while out on patrol. Leading technology companies have products that enhance safety, including in-car video, evidence capture and transfer, automated emergency warning lights, mobile computing platforms and radios, fleet management software, radar solutions, and more. Here’s a look at just some of the current technological offerings for police fleets.

COBAN FOCUS H1 Intelligent In-Car Video

COBAN ushers in a new age of vehicle intelligence with its FOCUS H1 platform for police vehicles. The FOCUS H1 enhances digital evidence analytics by bringing ‘edge computing’ to the vehicle. The FOCUS H1 has an inference engine, supporting object identification applications for immediate notification. FOCUS H1 supports third-party video analytics software applications that allow agencies to identify objects, and even alerting the officer if in a dangerous situation. These applications enhance officer safety and efficiency—assisting officer awareness while performing their policing duties.

In addition to cutting-edge vehicle intelligence, the FOCUS H1 is a genuine in-car video system. It utilizes COBAN’s FailSafe technology to continuously record to the internal drive, while storing event-based videos on the removable drive. COBAN utilizes high-performance, industrial-grade, solid-state drives. Evidence capture and management is also simplified by uploading body camera video/audio into the FOCUS H1 in-car video system. Additionally, the system uses high-density video compression for improved evidence capture, transfer, and management—offering higher resolution with less storage requirement.

The FOCUS H1 platform is designed with removable panels, which allow for stackable/connectable modules. This uniquely configurable design creates increased capability, including expansion for up to six HD cameras. The FOCUS H1 meets military specification MIL-STD 810G—built to take on the temperature, shock, and vibration in extreme mobile environments. With sophisticated power management and uninterrupted power supply (UPS), the Smart Power Module regulates vehicle voltage and protects your vehicle’s battery and the system’s own power supply. It also protects against video corruption by supporting safe shutdown in the event vehicle battery loss occurs. Software updates and system settings can be wirelessly downloaded to reduce human error and eliminate downtime during updates.

COBAN Technologies is a leading provider of state-of-the-art in-car video systems, body cameras, and evidence management solutions for law enforcement and public safety communities. Since 2002, COBAN has worked with many of the largest law enforcement agencies in the country to deliver efficient, configurable, and end-to-end scalable solutions. The Police Interface Module (PIM) for the Dodge Durango Pursuit is a single module with multiple functions designed to allow a law enforcement fleet to add, automatically activate, and/or deactivate OEM features on the SUV (similar to the Charger Pursuit version). Agencies can customize the PIM by adding desired features.

Standard features include:

Intelligent Switch Mode: Turns the VOLUME/SEEK buttons on the back of the steering wheel into four programmable auxiliary switches that function as momentary (e.g., for push-to-talk radio), timed, latching, or progressive (e.g., turn on switch 2 and switch 1 turns off).

Chime Mute: Deactivates alert chimes for covert operations.

Engine Stop/Start Override: Prevents the engine from shutting off when in Drive and VSS is 0 mph on V6 powertrains.

Auto Park Override: Allows the driver to remain in Drive with the door open and the seat belt unbuckled when the key fob is inside the vehicle (a huge safety issue).

Auto Sport Mode: Automatically engages the Durango’s Sport Mode when the siren controller is activated. This improves the vehicle’s performance characteristics for more aggressive driving.

Optional features include:

Blackout Mode: Deactivates all external and internal lights for covert operations including headlights, taillights, and brake lights.

IdleLock with AutoSense TechnologyTM: A theft deterrent system that automatically locks/unlocks the shifter in Park every time the officer exits by sensing the key fob’s proximity to the vehicle. Includes an optional weapons rack and rear hatch disable feature.

Surveillance Mode: An award-winning officer safety product that uses OEM sensors to detect motion at the rear of the vehicle and provides audible/visual warnings, locks the doors, rolls up the windows, and activates the rear lights.

All the above features are accessible from one module with just a few simple connections inside the vehicle.
