Department Name:

Farmington Police Department

Department Head:
Chief Steve Hebbe
Farmington, NM
The Farmington Police Department takes pride in our new Community Service vehicles. The distinctive design of the city’s name matches the logo on our patrol vehicles, with the graphics representing the beautiful sandstone bluffs south of town, landmarks visible from almost anywhere in the city. The Zia “sun symbol” rising over the bluffs echos the New Mexico state flag. Two considerations were paramount in the choice of the design. One was that it reflected the vital function that the FPD’s Community Service officers perform in taking reports, directing traffic at crash scenes, securing crime scenes, collecting evidence and other roles that free up our officers for other matters that only sworn personnel can address. The other major consideration—safety—arises out of the tragic slaying of Community Service Officer Vicky Chavez on July 9th, 1992 who was mistaken for a police officer and shot while performing a residence check for vacationing homeowners. Thus, while the FPD wants to signal its affiliation with and appreciation for the great work of our Community Service Officers, in the interest of their safety it is vital that they be clearly distinguishable from sworn police officers. We believe that the combination of the “Farmington” bluffs and the relocated Zia sun symbol accomplishes the former goal, while the absence of police markings and the clearly delineated “Community Service” in the logo achieves the latter. CSO safety at crash scenes also is ensured through high-visibility amber-blue-red LED lighting.
