Impact Armor Technologies Level IIIA Ballistic Clipboard

The patent-pending ballistic clipboard from Impact Armor Technologies looks and feels like a normal clipboard, yet provides NIJ Level IIIA 0108.01 ballistic protection. According to the company, it is designed to provide protection where you need it most—at hand. It is not meant to replace body armor. It is designed to provide additional protection when you need it. In addition to law enforcement and private security sales, the ballistic clipboard is also being marketed to teachers as a school safety product.

Impact Armor Technologies was founded in 2006 as a producer of high-purity alumina ceramics for use as strike faces and for use in heavy armor applications. The Cleveland, Ohio-based company develops and deploys custom armor systems to meet specific end-user requirements. All armor technologies are designed, tested, evaluated and produced in-house, as are the final products.

The clipboard was developed by request for local law enforcement agencies. A police officer touring the facility came up with the idea. The clipboard is made of an advanced Kevlar® weave composite that is lighter than the competition. Since it is not made of a hard plastic like many standard clipboards, it cannot fracture or shatter into dangerous shrapnel. It is the only ballistic clipboard on the market with an ergonomically designed, secure handle. This makes it easy to grip and securely hold.

The clipboard is the result of several years of research and testing. Prototypes were tested in the field by law enforcement. Several design changes were incorporated into the final design as a result from the officers who actually tested it. It is a product whose genesis actually was from the end user and not the other way around.

As a result of the field testing, rubber trim was added on the edges of the clipboard to make it more comfortable to hold and less likely to catch when inserted in a patrol bag. A change in the shape and size of the handhold was also made to provide a more positive grip and make it easier to use when gloves are worn. A sturdier waterproof material was also added.

The clipboard measures 10 inches x 13 inches and is 3/8-inch thick. It weighs under two pounds. Although it obviously weighs more than a standard clipboard, it is not so much more as to make it unwieldy. The clip on the clipboard is attached with Chicago screws. The clip is user interchangeable on either side of the clipboard for left/right handed use. It may be ordered set up for either hand.

The clipboard is designed to exceed NIJ Level IIIA specifications. It has been tested to provide multi-shot protection at both standoff and point-blank ranges against 9mm, 357 Magnum, 40 S&W and 44 Magnum rounds. In field testing, it withstood multiple shots, groupings of shots, including 11 9mm and six 44 Magnum rounds without compromise. In addition to providing personal protection, it also can serve as a safe backstop when required to load and unload firearms off range.

The clipboard can do more than just stop bullets. It is stab proof and can withstand heavy blows. The ergonomic design and light weight of the clipboard allows it to be employed as a low-profile expedient impact weapon and control device. It makes a great mini lap desk when seated in a vehicle. In addition, the rubber edging allows you to set the clipboard on a vehicle without running the risk of scratching the vehicle’s paint. The Impact Armor Technologies Ballistic Clipboard has an MSRP of $150.
