Customized Dodge Charger Pursuit

One of the most photographed vehicles on the show floor at November’s SEMA show was the customized Dodge Charger Pursuit—America’s high-performance police vehicle.

The SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show is the premier automotive specialty products trade event in the world. It draws the industry’s brightest minds and hottest products all to one place. The SEMA Show provides attendees with educational seminars, product demonstrations, special events, and networking opportunities.

The SEMA Show draws more than 60,000 domestic and international buyers. The displays are segmented into 12 sections, and a New Products Showcase featured nearly 2,500 newly introduced parts, tools and components. SEMA is the car guy’s heaven—the largest convention in the U.S. devoted to specialty cars, crossovers, SUVs, trucks and other specialty vehicles.

The Team

FCA Fleet, the Mopar brand, Whelen Engineering and Katzkin Leather teamed up to customize this one-of-a-kind Dodge Charger Pursuit, which is equipped with a custom carbon-fiber graphic scheme. In addition, this customized Charger Pursuit featured the latest light package offered by Whelen, custom Mopar leather-wrapped, Charger Pursuit-specific seats by Katzkin, and Mopar accessories and performance parts.

It started out simply enough. Whelen asked FCA Fleet if it wanted to display the Dodge Charger Pursuit equipped with Whelen lighting outside the SEMA convention hall.

“From there, it quickly mushroomed into the idea of using all our partners to customize the vehicle in a way that not only law enforcement but any custom-car enthusiast would like to drive,” said Jeff Kommor, Vice President–U.S. Sales Operations, Fleet and Small Business Sales, FCA US LLC. “As it was taking shape, it became apparent that this vehicle deserved its own platform on the SEMA show floor and was showcased by Whelen in the exhibit hall.”

Charger Pursuit V8

The customized Charger Pursuit was conceived as a police officer’s dream office, not only in looks but also in handling performance. Charger Pursuit V8 and V8 all-wheel-drive (AWD) models deliver 370 horsepower (best-in-class) for best-in-class acceleration performance needed for police-fleet duty, including 0-to-60 mph in less than 6 seconds. The legendary Charger Pursuit powertrain set the fastest-ever lap time at the 2012 Model Year Michigan State Police (MSP) Vehicle Evaluation (1:33.70 minutes) at the Grattan Raceway in Belding, Mich.

The customized model was built with a 5.7L HEMI® V8 MDS VVT Engine. MDS is the fuel economy-improving, cylinder deactivation, Multiple Displacement System. VVT is the torque increasing Variable Valve Timing camshaft and valvetrain system.

The SEMA Charger Pursuit had Convenience Group 1 (AHM) with power adjustable pedals, power front driver/passenger seats and power driver/passenger four-way lumbar adjustment, Park Assist Group (AMV) with park sense, rear park assist system, and ParkView rear backup camera.

Mopar Custom Shop

The customized Charger Pursuit showcases Mopar Accessories and Performance parts. A turnkey upfit-ready solution from Mopar Custom Shop includes the Base Prep Police Package (AYE) with front and rear wire harnesses, power distribution center, siren speaker and bracket, trunk tray, and cooling fan. Additional features include police floor console (CUG), entire fleet alike key, matching black, right and left, LED spotlamps.

Mopar borrowed the larger and wider 20 x 9-inch lightweight forged aluminum wheel finished in Hyper Black II used on a Dodge Challenger for a more performance-oriented appearance. In addition, the lightweight wheel saves up to eight pounds per wheel over the stock application. Lowering springs were installed to reduce the vehicle height and add an aggressive and sinister look. Mopar’s Front Strut Tower Brace was installed to improve vehicle handling.
For under hood appeal and performance, the customized Charger Pursuit uses the Mopar Cold Air Intake for increased engine breathing. These Accessories and Performance Parts are extremely popular in the Mopar enthusiast community and considered the benchmark for vehicle improvements and customization.

For police and sheriff’s departments wanting to duplicate this customized upfit, the Mopar accessories and performance parts were specifically: Lightweight Wheel (77070063AC), Mopar Center Caps (82212508), Strut Tower Brace Caps (P5155763), Strut Tower Brace (P5155950), Lowering Springs (P4510854), and Cold Air Intake (77070044AC).

Whelen Engineering

Whelen Motorsports light specialist Alex Olson headed up the lighting portion of the upfit. It began with a Setina push bumper with recessed ION™ TRIO™, which was provided for the SEMA show car by Setina Manufacturing. Other emergency lights included Red/Blue/White Inner Edge® XLP DUO™, PAR-46 spotlight replacement, LINSV2™ lights with vehicle specific bracket under both mirrors, and Rear TRIO RTX Inner Edge. This was all controlled by Whelen’s CanTrol™ system.

In the wake of all the attention that this customized Dodge Charger Pursuit generated at the SEMA show, requests are pouring in for the customized vehicle to be displayed in not only law enforcement venues but at other upcoming major vocation shows that feature vehicle displays.
